4th day in HK
Standing up when in Europe it is 2 in the night is still a little strange and in the morning, at 6-7, we wake up; we try to sleep some more, to be smart during the day. Our thoughts this morning are for those who crowd at dawn the streets of the biggest Oriental cities, Hong Kong among them. Denis, the president of our twin association in Paris, went out really very soon in the morning: before his hotel he found a group of Tai Chi people and in a corner not far from them, he practiced a little Qi Gong. At these latitudes, probably, it is more natural to wake up early to go and practice... |

Saturday night, the demonstration has begun with the meeting of the almost one hundred school leaders of the participating groups; 4 were the honour places, one for the Wu Style representative, granddaughter of the Wu family Grand Master, one for the direct descendent of XIX generation of the Chen family, Master Chen Zhen Lei, and two for the Yang school, one for the younger brother of Yang Sau Chu, Master Yang Zhen Duo, with his wife, and one for Master Chu. |

The hotel, very near to the Stadium, today was full of artists and participants, who lodged here: I met Master Chen Jen Lei, whom I have not seen for fifteen years, at that time he had come to Milan to stay for a month, there were 7, 8 of us fans, and he taught us the whole family Chen form, with great kindness.
Very simple and delicious person. – Then I left the Chen Form, because I thought that it was better to completely dedicate oneself to one single style, to deeply understand Tai Chi, and Yang family style fits for me better -

In the afternoon, going down by lift – the room I shared with my friend Guido, the Swiss ITCCA representative, is at the 17th floor – the door opened at the 15th floor and an old smiling lady enters, followed by a cheerful little old man, greeting me with a smile.
Getting down, I notice that his breath is somewhat asthmatic, and I think to myself: some Tai Chi would be good for him. Arriving and bowing one another, I think <what a nice couple>. In the hall, I meet another French ITCCA representative, Paul Woo Fon, who tells me that that nice old man is famous Yang Zhen Duo… |

There goes Dario, I point the Master to him and he, immediately, with his smartest smile, gets near to him, takes a notes from his pocket and, without saying a word, puts it open in his hands together with a pencil, the Master - who could be more than eighty – has just a second’s hesitation, then takes his own drawing pen, and gives Dario his autograph, before our eyes, it appears not his name and surname in letters, but three beautiful Chinese signs, drawn carefully, signifying his name.
Dario is very happy and the others of us a little envious. |
|
|
 |
|
Can you imagine? One of those three signs is the surname “Yang”: the same family that 5 generations ago gave her name to the form, that is so famous all over the world |

The night’s before meeting between Master Chu, disciple of Yang Sau Chung, and Master Yang, is a piece of the modern history of Tai Chi, a meeting between the two branches of the Yang family, after decades of isolation, due to the fact that one brother, Yang Jen Duo, remained in China, while the other, the eldest one, Yang Sau Chung succeeded in escaping to Hong Kong – he was already a legend in China, but such Masters were not excepted to have a nice life after the Red Army took the power. |

On Sunday the Tai Chi competitions went on all day long in the in the sport building, where we enter a couple of time to peer around, our huge badges hunging on our necks: I must tell you that we did not expect much, and actually we did not get impressed by the modern Taichichuanistic movements, performed by hundreds of Chinese people, come from all over China: in these last decades China has deprived Tai Chi from any energetic form and the ancient Taoist art does not appear at all, on the contrary, groups entering with martial pass are too much “Confucian”; perhaps, the many brilliant colours dressed by the “athletes” wanted – unconsciously - to cover the inner poverty of the art shown nowadays. |

Impressive was, instead, the glow of every Chinese there, when we passed, we “Europeans”, they always smiled at us and the welcoming came from the heart. Many boys and girls, some of them aged only 6 or 7, wearing snazzy and flowing clothes, proud of their competition metal swords, “swimming” around us; Dario, always he, wants to take a picture of three of them, and he founds himself surrounded by children and adults, who “force” him among them and, with their polaroids, suddenly appeared from nowhere, take a photo after another to him, while he is among their children, like a Western Bruce Lee? Now it’s Monday afternoon, at 19 we will attend the final galà, no competitions there, only the Masters’ demonstrations; at about 20, it will be our turn… |
